The Animal & Veterinary Sciences B.S. degree program offers options in Science, Wildlife Science, Companion & Lifestyle Animals,Veterinary Science, Business and Public Health. For sample curriculums guides, explore each concentration below!
This option is ideal for students looking to obtain advanced training in animal sciences, chemistry, biology, and related sciences in preparation for graduate or professional school, including veterinary or human medicine. Students who fulfill the requirements for this option will possess a foundation for careers in research as well as many other fields related to animal, poultry, veterinary and related sciences, including the academic pre-requisites for entry into veterinary school.
Similar to the Science option, this field of study provides students the opportunity to obtain advanced training in animal sciences, chemistry, biology, and related sciences in preparation for graduate or professional school, including veterinary or human medicine; however, this option provides a more focused curriculum with regard to coursework in wildlife biology for students to pursue careers specific to wildlife. It also provides students with the academic foundation to pursue careers in research as well as many other fields related to animal, poultry, veterinary and related sciences, including the academic pre-requisites for entry into veterinary school.
This option prepares students for graduate or professional school, including veterinary or human medicine, and provides a more focused curriculum with regard to coursework in companion animals (Introduction to Companion Animals, Companion Animal Nutrition, and more!). Students will receive the academic foundation to pursue careers specific to companion and lifestyle animals, as well as in research and many other fields related to animal, poultry, veterinary and related sciences, including the academic pre-requisites for entry into veterinary school.
Students who are focused on applying to vet school can choose this option, which is an accelerated program designed to meet the minimum requirements for applying to a school/college of veterinary medicine after only three years of undergraduate study. Completion of this option in its entirety plus the successful completion of the curriculum of the first year at the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary medicine leads to a Bachelor of Science. The completion of the first three years of this curriculum does not guarantee acceptance into a college/school of veterinary medicine, as applicants are selected on a competitive basis, so please review all pre-professional requirements carefully.
If you have a business-focused mind, this option provides students with formal training in agricultural business and management as related to livestock production, providing a foundation for careers in industry, extension, agricultural marketing, and more. Opportunities for advanced graduate studies exist in agricultural economics, agricultural education, business administration, and livestock management.
If you’re interested in pursuing a Master's of Public Health, this accelerated option is designed to help students complete three years of undergraduate study and enter the MPH program, earning a BS degree in Animal and Veterinary Science after the successful completion of the first year of the MPH program. The public health option prepares students to work as public health practitioners in government, private industries, or non-profits, working to raise awareness of best public health care practices, or establish new health programs, and evaluate existing ones.
The Animal Sciences graduate degree provides focus options in specialty areas including nutrition, parasitology, silvopasture, breeding and genetics, or reproduction and biotechnology, which are selected in consultation with an advisory committee. During the program, you will perform hands-on research with cattle, poultry, goats and a variety of other domestic and laboratory animals. This program is flexible in terms of research and course work so that you can achieve your career-inspired and individual objectives with a total of ~30 credit hours that include a research (thesis option) or professional project (non-thesis option) to enable you to enter into an exciting career.
