What goes into providing food for the global population, and how do we research and improve processes? This degree program explores how chemistry, biology, and other sciences are used to study the nutritional content of food, how it can be improved, and how it is developed and distributed. The Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences offers B.S. degrees in Food Science, Nutritional Science, a Didactic Program in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition, and dual degrees in Food Science & Biology or in Nutritional Science & Biology to prepare you for a future in nutrition, health care, or food services.

Undergraduate Degree Programs

The Food and Nutritional Science B.S. degree program offers options in Food Science, Nutritional Sciences, Public Health Nutrition, Dietetics, Food Science/Biology and Nutritional Sciences/Biology.

Food Science

Food Science

The Food Science program integrates food science, chemistry, physics, biology/microbiology and mathematics in an applied manner. It is approved by the Higher Education Review Board of the Institute of Food Technologists to empower students to enter fulfilling careers in the industry.

Nutritional Sciences

Nutritional Sciences

A program that integrates nutritional science, biology, chemistry, physics and human anatomy/physiology, it is a hands-on degree that prepares you for an exciting future career. The basic science foundation this curriculum is built on prepares students to earn a M.S. or Ph.D. in either applied community nutrition or nutritional biochemistry.

Public Health Nutrition

Public Health Nutrition

If you want to make an impact on public health, this program provides you with skills in (1) core knowledge-chemistry, biochemistry, nutrigenomics, biology and microbiology, (2) developing community programs to promote optimal nutrition and good health; (3) working with special groups at risk for disease; and (4) evaluation of lifestyle, environmental, and psychological issues related to nutrition and health.

Are you interested in becoming a registered dietitian? The Didactic Program in Dietetics option is the first step to success, as it is designed to ensure graduates will have the technical and academic knowledge to successfully compete for placement in a Dietetic Internship program which enables you to take the national RD exam, enter graduate school or apply for entry-level jobs in the field.

Food Science Biology

Food Science/Biology

This fast-track program allows students to the opportunity to attain a dual major in Food Science and Biology in just four years and two summers. Upon graduation, student will have two B.S. degrees, opening opportunities for graduate school or a great foundation for multiple science-related career paths.

Nutritional Sciences Biology

Nutritional Sciences/Biology

An accelerated dual degree program, the Nutritional Science/Biology affords students the opportunity to attain two B.S. degrees in four years and two summers. Upon graduation, students can pursue continuing education or enter their chosen career path within the sciences industry.

Graduate Degree Programs

The Food and Nutritional Science degree program offers a M.S. in Food & Nutrtional Science and a Ph.D. in Integrative Biosciences.

M.S. Food and Nutritional Science

This two-year degree program in the Master of Science in Food and Nutritional Sciences provides students with four research options: Food Product Development, Food Safety, Nutritional  Biochemistry, and Community Nutrition each with a thesis or non-thesis (project) option. This graduate program provides the opportunity for greater breadth and depth in a selected area of specialization to prepare you to work in myriad of industries related to food and nutrition. 

Ph.D. Integrative Biosciences

This program enables students to address local and global challenges using new approaches to graduate education and research in the life sciencesThe Integrative Biosciences (IBS) Ph.D. program is designed to develop professionals who have not only technical proficiency but who also possess the flexibility and adaptability to address the complexities of current challenges. It is a valuable program for future leaders and pioneers in all STEM fields.
